exhibited by my letter to the Acting Colonial Secretary, dated 7th January 1882, and its enclosures, noted in margin, viz. that His Excellency the Governor, after his return from the North, told me that he would bear the costs of the suit brought Mr. Hayllar against me on account of what I had told Mr. Johnson; that on 6th December 1881 I accordingly forwarded the lawyer's bill to his Excellency reminding him of his promise requesting him to pay it; that His Excellency gave reply but kept the bill; and that on 31st December 1881 I again wrote and reminded His Excellency of the promise to pay the bill and forwarded to him the Attorney's letter pressing for payment; that again the Governor made no reply; that on 6th of January 1882, I then wrote to the Private Secretary requesting an interview with the Governor, and that it was only His Excellency, whilst refusing me an interview, advanced for the first time, in a letter in one sentence of which I had to point out several misquotations and inaccuracies, the
